Policy Opportunities at the Intersection of Community Development and Urban Waters – A Peer Exchange

December 9 @ 1:00 pm - 2:15 pm EST

On Dec 9, 2021 the UWLN Equitable Development Collaborative is hosting a peer exchange with representatives from Local Initiatives Support Corporation’s (LISC) policy team to share emerging policy opportunities at the federal level to promote affordable housing, economic development, and workforce development. LISC is a national community development organization that drives policy changes and targets investments to catalyze economic, health and safety for individuals and communities. LISC has a network of local offices in 38 cities and works in hundreds of urban communities across the U.S. The peer call will include a panel-like discussion—between UWLN collaborative members and our expert speakers—to explore the intersection between community development policies and our Network’s goals around urban waters revitalization.

It is increasingly important for urban waters’ practitioners to consider gentrification, displacement and equitable development in their environmental work. Greening neighborhoods and improving water quality in urban rivers is intended to create healthier neighborhoods, yet the impact on historically marginalized communities isn’t always positive. Environmental improvements can also raise the cost of living in a region; and in some cases, greening results in further marginalization. Members of the Urban Waters Learning Network Equitable Development Collaborative have been engaged in meaningful conversations about anti-displacement strategies and what it means to work with the community rather than for the community. We want to invite you to join the conversation!

Guest Speakers:

  • Mark Kudlowitz, Senior Director of Policy, LISC
  • Michelle Harati, Senior Policy Advisor, LISC

Moderators:

  • Alicia Smith, Community Liaison, Junction Coalition
  • Maria De Jesus, Housing Justice Organizer, Ironbound Community Corporation
